Breastfeeding - Helpful hints to take the pressure off

Breastfeeding for new mums doesn’t always come easily, and it can feel like there is a lot of pressure on you to quickly get the hang of it and produce enough milk to keep bub happy. Take a deep breath and be reminded that if you are feeling the pressure you are not alone. Here are a couple of simple tips to help take the pressure off while you try to get into the flow so to speak!

  1. Breast Feeding Clinics & Lactation Consultants are wonderful resources available to new mums as they offer encouragement and support along with fabulous tips and tricks to help you and bub get the hang of it. Don’t be afraid to put your hand up for some help, even if it’s only been 24 hrs! They can give you guidance with your technique and what breastfeeding position is best for you and your bub. Believe it or not, this can vary from one mum & bub to another. If you are in Australia you can jump onto the Australian Breastfeeding Association site for more advice and services.
  2. Breast Milk Supply.  If you are concerned about low milk supply we highly recommend giving it a boost with something like a lactation cookie.  We particularly love Pinky’s Boobie Bikkies which are a delicious natural way to boost supply.
  3. Your Choice. At the end of the day the decision to breastfeed is a very personal one and one that will no doubt be commented on by all and sundry! Not every mum is able to breastfeed despite her best efforts and this must never be seen as a sign of failure.  As mums we do the best we can, and at the end of the day if you have a happy and healthy bub, be they breastfed or bottle-fed, then you are on the right track! Give yourself a pat on the back!
